HOW WE GOT HERE

Winfree Church has a deep passion for reaching out to those who are in need and sharing God's love in meaningful ways. We have a rich history of over 160 years, but what we are most excited about is where God is leading us in the future.  We are focused on demonstrating the love of Jesus to the people that live in and around Midlothian and sharing the good news of a new life through Him.

Winfree Church was organized by 22 members in 1852 as Jerusalem Baptist Church.  Originally located a few miles to the west, in 1881 the congregation decided it needed to be closer to the mines in Midlothian to minister there.  The "meeting house" was rolled down Midlothian Turnpike on logs to our current location.  Shortly after arrival, there was a series of devasting explosions in the mines and the church took care of numerous widows and orphans.   Winfree Church was renamed  in honor of pastor Robert H. Winfree and his father, pastor David B. Winfree, who initially led the church from 1852 to 1873 and again from 1884 to 1888. Robert H. Winfree was pastor of the church from 1889 to 1940.
