how we got here
Winfree Memorial Baptist Church has a deep passion for reaching out to those who are in need and sharing God's love in meaningful ways. We have a rich history that covers the past 160 years, but what we are most excited about is where God is leading us in the future and how we can continue to share the love of Christ with the people that live in and around Midlothian.
Winfree Church was organized by 22 members in 1852 as Jerusalem Baptist Church. The congregation has worshiped in its present location in the village of Midlothian, Virginia since 1881. During that year there was a tragic coal mining accident and members of the congregation felt the building was too far from the mines to help those in need. In a most unusual act of faith and courage, the congregation placed the "meeting house" on logs and rolled it down Midlothian Turnpike.
Winfree church is named after pastor Robert H. Winfree and in memory of his father, Pastor David B. Winfree who initially led the church from 1852 to 1873 and again from 1884 to 1888. Robert H. Winfree was pastor of the church from 1889 to 1940.
